Retief and SJ Meintjes Attorneys were established by Mr Francois Jacobus Retief in 2007, under the name and style of Retief attorneys, wherein he specialised in Criminal Litigation, in the greater Johannesburg area. In March 2010 Mr SJ Meintjes joined Retief Attorneys as a consultant assisting in opening a Civil Litigation department. Mr Meintjes was admitted as an Attorney on 27 July 2010, and commenced as a professional assistant to Mr Retief.

Mr Meintjes was invited by Mr Retief to join as a partner, and the name of the firm changed to Retief and SJ Meintjes Attorneys with effect from 1 January 2011. In June 2012, Mr Meintjes took over the firm, Retief and SJ Meintjes Incorporated was incorporated on the 12th of March 2019.
